Day in the Life shoot in Cambridge

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of spending the day with some close friends in Cambridge. It was Grandfather’s 80th birthday and they had booked me to provide a record of their family day together, relaxing at home with the children and the dogs.

Whether it’s old friends or new clients, it’s always such a privilege, and responsibility, to be invited into someone’s home to take pictures, and to have the whole day with these guys was really special. I wanted to make it easy for them - few of us relish the prospect of having our picture taken, even if it’s someone you know. So we agreed we’d take a purely documentary approach: no posing or artificial shots, just recording the fun, the connections and the quiet moments. This way everyone could relax and focus on engaging with each other rather than on the camera.

There were so many opportunities for lovely portraits and story-telling images, using window light as we explored the bedrooms and soft toy collections (mostly giraffe-based 🦒), capturing the family together as they reminisced over old photographs, getting some great action shots of football skills in the sports field behind the house, wandering round the stunning garden, and then some downtime as everyone relaxed and gathered their energy before lunch. We also got to use some of Cambridge’s beautiful backdrops as we walked to and from the restaurant.

I love the story these pictures tell. One of celebration, of an important birthday, and of family bonds. The simple joys of spending time in each other’s company. The children are growing up fast and it’s wonderful to see them playing together. For the grandparents it was a rare opportunity to bring the whole family together. Moments like these are important, and deserve to be remembered. Family photos are a legacy, and no matter how ordinary your pictures seem now, they are a gift you will love looking back on in years to come.

Want to take better pictures yourself?

As the adage goes, the best camera is the one you have on you. Our phones have made photographers of us all, recording our everyday experiences, holidays and fun times together. As a photographer it’s easy to get snobbish about phone cameras. For sure, they don’t have all the capabilities of a ‘proper’ camera. But they have many unique advantages, and some of my most precious pictures were taken with my phone. I’ve written a guide to taking better photos with your phone camera - just click below to get your free download.
